Ghee Rice is one of the most comforting foods in the Indian Subcontinent. A simple meal which provides one with almost all essential nutrients for a balanced diet. Rice provides carbohydrates, Ghee provides healthy fats and a pinch of salt that essential sodium in the diet.

Our Grandparents often recommended these simple recipes like ghee rice when we were young. The challenge is how to adapt these simple recipes to our busy lifestyles.

Kitchen Equipment:

  1. Large Vessel to Boil Water
  2. 2 Spoons
  3. 2 Plates to Serve
  4. A Gas Stove Top/ Induction Cook Top

 

RECIPE 1 - Simple Ghee Rice

Ghee Rice is simple, easy to digest & even easier to make. Try this 10 minute recipe.

Ingredients:

  1. 250gm Basmati Rice
  2. 500ml Water
  3. 20 g clarified butter/ghee
  4. Salt to Taste

Method:

  1. In a large vessel, add 500ml cold water.
  2. Add in 250g Basmati Rice and add 1-2 teaspoons of salt (Pro Tip: Taste the water, it should be slightly more salty than usual. Scientifically Speaking the salt is going to be absorbed into the rice and adds flavour to the rice. But we’re hungry, lets move on!)
  3. Bring the mixture of water and rice to the boil, this will take 5 minutes on high heat.
  4. Now turn your heat down to simmer, and partially cover the vessel with a cover.
  5. Leave for another 5 minutes, partially covered.
  6. As the rice cooks, the grains are going to absorb all that water and become roughly double in size.
  7. After 5 minutes, the rice is going to look almost cooked.
  8. Now we’re going to turn off the heat and cover the vessel completely, Leave to rest for 2 minutes.
  9. Uncover and add a dollop of the ghee and mix well.

 

How to Enjoy:

This simple Ghee Rice is best enjoyed straight off the heat. The warm comforting notes of the ghee and the mild saltiness of the rice, gives a beautiful and radiant mouthfeel. Yum!

  2. Fully Cover the vessel when you know the rice is just about done, if you cover it when its completely done, the rice will turn soft and mushy.

RECIPE 2 - Jeera Onion Rice:

Jeera Onion Rice is a fragrant version of Ghee Rice, Jeera/Cumin adds a beautiful aroma and also makes this recipe super easy to digest. Its absolutely perfect for kids and toddlers, just starting out  on rice.  Try this 10 minute recipe.

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

RECIPE 4 – Royal Indian Pulav:

Pulav/ Pilaf/ Pulao are generic terms used for a rice dish loaded with ghee, spices and dry fruits. This recipe is a basically a ghee rice on steroids!!

This dish has been rumoured to be introduced to India by none other than Alexander the Great himself! Not only recreating this recipe in your home kitchen is a daunting task, but simply buying ingredients for this dish are expensive and time consuming. The proportions of spices to be used, is also confusing.   Luckily we have this 10 minute recipe, which comes close to the real thing!

Ingredients:
